Nothing too fancy here, but a great quick dish with about 2 of your “5 a day” in addition to some meat and beans for all you protein lovers out there. Does stain, of course. You might want to watch out for that… While I’m here, let me just recommend Frugal Feeding for all your tasty-yet-inexpensive feeding needs. And as an added bonus, the author is as prone to sesquipedalianism as I.

Gillian M told me that honey never goes off, and honey found in Egyptian Mummys’ tombs is edible. She’s a medic student, so I’m sure she must be 100% correct all the time.
Whether your honey is from an Egyptian tomb or the cheapest variety at Tesco, this is tasty. As always, feel free to adapt depending on what you’ve got in your cupboards / boxes lying on the floor of your bedroom.
Lentil and Kidney Bean Chilli (Vegetarian / Vegan)

Mark Driscoll can keep his chilli con carne, this delicious chilli is one of the nicest I’ve tasted (though I do say so myself…), with the balsamic vinegar and dark chocolate giving it a hint of unusual flavour, plus as an added bonus is cheap on the pocket and kind to the environment! And can take being left in the fridge for several days. Just the thing for a cold, dark winter’s night, with rice or pita bread. I just left out a few of the spices from the original recipe as I’ve a limited supply over here, and the lack of bay leaves didn’t seem to make a difference.
*Added bonus* as I found out when searching (well, wikipedia-ing) the difference between red and green lentils (I’ve always used red, but they’re about to run out and French stores appear to have only the green variety), this chilli is not only amazing, it is also potentially biblical - Genesis Ch25: Jacob makes a lentil pottage in exchange for his brother’s birthrights. So booyah. (I can see why, it is delicious.)

Sweet and Sour C…arrots

So, at the market, you can buy carrots at 0.99€ a kilo; at Lidl, you can get 3kg of carrots for 0.99€. Needless to say, I bought the latter. That is, however, quite a lot of carrots, and other than being the crazy Scottish girl giving out carrots to everyone on my corridor, I wasn’t sure what to do with them. A google later, and I came up with a few ideas other than my initial ideas of carrot sticks, salad, and soup. The first google suggestion was carrot soup, with a bit of a twist in that it called for the addition of orange juice. Now, maybe it was the fact that I substituted it for a slosh of sirop a l’orange, but this soup tasted absolutely bogging. There is no other word for it. I may also be put off eau a l’orange for life, which isn’t ideal when a hot, non-milk based drink is called for for hiking expeditions. Anyway, I digress… the next potentially intriguing thing that presented itself was sweet and sour carrots. So I went with them.
FYI, this is what I’m dealing with kitchen-wise. (Rare moment when nobody else is trying to use the 2 working hobs)
So, yeah…
You can’t see, around the corner is a table with 5 chairs, but nobody eats there so there’s not really much point to it.

Stew

Gillian assures me that if one wants to call a dish “stew”, it requires to have potatoes cooked in it, rather than served boiled on the side (which would make the pot-dish a casserole) [I think that's the right way round]. And she’s from Northern Ireland, so she knows about her potatoes
. Anyway, this meets that definition. Rather sweet because of the apple juice and honey, but tasty (as long as you like apple juice and honey).

After working in a butcher’s during my last year of high school, I think I’ve reason to be wary of sausages. But after checking the ingredients on the back of the higher-quality brand in Waitrose, it seems there are some that are made of more than fat and OFFAL. These taste goood, but be wary of adding more spice than specified, or else they can get quite spicy!

Gotta love the reduced section in Tesco’s for cheap meat that you can buy on a whim, pop in the freezer, and work out what on earth to do with later after a quick google and scour of what you’ve got in your cupboards. This recipe uses a ridiculous amount of dishes and looks ludicrously posh if you’re just making it for yourself (this recipe makes enough for 2, so you can half it if necessary), but tastes lovely

Just the ticket to make use of prawns which are often on the reduced pile at your local supermarket. Can be frozen after you’ve made it, just need to make sure you reheat the rice carefully. Takes a while to make as all rice-y risotto dishes do, but the taste makes it worth it! It’s the sort of recipe you can adapt, adding in different meats and spices depending on what you fancy.

Not really spicy in the slightest, but that’s what my mum calls it and who am I to quibble? The peas and turmeric work really well, and the lentils thicken it nicely.
