Knitting Banter #5

So, the last time I posted about knitting was *quite* a while ago; I ended with:

In other news,

tomorrow is D-day. All packed (ish) and ready to go! Wishes of luck and prayers much appreciated (particularly the latter) – going anywhere new alone is always a bit daunting and is especially so when there’ll be the language barrier, and the staying-in-uni halls (a new experience for me!)

To anyone that knows me: my skype is my email address minus the “@gmail.com”. Add me and schedule a chat! :)

(Skype thing totally still stands)

In the interim, I have knitted… rather a lot of things. These have been for the most part presents so I’ve not been able to put them up at the time, but for my own narcissistic purposes (what else is a blog for?) I thought I’d do a retrospective of my work.

Any knitters that happen to be reading, I can link you the patterns if you want as they’re all free from ravelry.

Patterns of mine: Spock Pointy Ears , Fluffy Glittens , Sarah’s simple cable hat

So the super secret project which I hinted of in my last post is ripe for being revealed – ’twas an Aran (ie cabled) sweater, destined for a birthday present.

Took 5 weeks, which, barring my initial knitting project is the longest ever time I’ve spent on knitting a single thing… it would have taken longer if it hadn’t been the summer holidays… then again, it would have taken a shorter time if the shock of there being some sun in Glasgow hadn’t caused me to be outside and not knitting for a good few days amidst that.

Voici le pull:

(please ignore the messy room. The panda's called Raoul if you were wondering)

I figured Ruth wouldn’t mind me trying it on in case it was horrendous (tbh, she’d have got it anyway after that amount of knitting :P ) and for blog-posting purposes.

The pattern was http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/knitted-aran-sweater-1101 and I think it was quite a good introduction to cabled sweaters… not that I’m planning on doing many more of them, unless under a far diminished time restriction! Made a couple of mistakes as I’m not used to cabling, but sorted them out and ended up being quite quick by the end as I got used to the pattern, which I think’s to be expected.

Didn’t want to blog about too many projects one after another,

so didn’t post about this shrug on Saturday: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/ribbed-lace-bolero

(It's not actually that uneven, just a badly taken photo with a camera running out of battery...)

This was quick (did it in 2 days, maybe took 15 hours of actual knitting and sewing up) and I think it looks quite good! The photo’s not the best as my camera was about to run out of battery, and the sleeves aren’t really that uneven. It was also a good way of using up all the aran wool that’s lying about our house due to various cardigans and jumpers.

A sock and an octopus

Not quite as amazingly cool as my Harry Potter jumper, but the octopus is reasonably cute nonetheless, and knitting one sock (still to do its pair) on double pointed needles was adequately different to be an achievement in getting done. So, the sock:

(All I need is a long skirt pattern then I’l be head to toe in the same wool ;) )

And the octopus (hastily snapped up by my sister [aged 12] who’s been hankering after some knitted toys for a while):

I made a jumper!

And not just any jumper… a bona fide Harry Potter Weasley sweater!

(Taken in a mirror)

(just in time for the midnight showing in two weeks’ time!)

The ‘S’ is the right way round, there’s just nobody else around to take a photo of it at the moment…see:

Just to prove it isn't backwards... my arm wasn't long enough for more!Pattern: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-weasley-sweater

The Quest

My friends and avid fans, there is something about me which you may have been hitherto (what a word) unaware. I am engaged in a quest.

And not just any quest.

Oh no.

This is a quest for… Granny Points™.

Others among you may strive for “wife points”, but this is a far more serious endeavour.

Thus far, I have tried to fulfil this task by culinary means, but I think the time has come for a more concerted effort to be made, and therefore, I present to you this post of:

Knitting Banter #1

Apparently, blogging about baking all the time is not Jonathan-Campbell-friendly, and I should blog about other things from time to time. So, ever-compliant being that I am, I present a quick post about knitting, which I’m sure will be much more to his taste ;)

Items which I have recently knitted:

A lacy eyelet slouchy hat (I’m not much of a hat gal, but the lacyness was an interesting project, and I suppose it’s a good thing to have at one’s disposal – if you’re interested in the pattern, I added 4 stitches and knitted for 6 inches before starting to decrease, to make up for the fact that I was doing it on 5mm and 7mm needles rather than 5mm and 8mm as specified)

Eyelet hat modelled by the frankly amazing Customised Ikea Piggy Bank of Awesomeness

Fingerless mittens (a bit of a necessity in an old house such as that of my family, which doesn’t take kindly to heating up in summer or in winter)

Pickpocket chic

And the other thing which I have knitted since the end of exams:  a using-up-wool, trying-out-seamless-knitting (ie knitting all the way round on circular needles then switching to two sets as the stitches decrease), and trying-out-continental-knitting (using left hand), admittedly rather odd hillwalking-only ribbed hat (it looks slightly better on me than the panda, but not much)

Yes, I have a giant panda. His name is Raoul.
