cranberry sauce

Aldi has cranberries at 99p for 200g, so why not make your own sauce this year? Surprisingly, the end product still has that seemingly artificial-pink tinge, but it does taste much better than all but the highest-end bought stuff, and is really easy!

(makes 1 jar)

200g cranberries
125ml orange
125ml water
4 tbsp brown sugar
1 lemon/satsuma

  1. With a sharp knife, cut a sliver of the skin off the lemon (avoid white pith as much as possible)
  2. Add all ingredients to a medium saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer over a medium heat.
  3. Heat, stirring occasionally, until most of the berries have burst and the sauce is starting to thicken (10-12 minutes)
  4. Pull out the piece of lemon zest and let the sauce cool – zest some more of the citrus skin on top.
